Musty AC: Here's How to Fix it

After a long day at work, there’s nothing better than the cold burst of air when you walk through the front door – but sometimes there’s a smell that leaves a lot to be desired. If you notice a musty smell when your AC is running, it could be a sign of clogs within the machine causing mildew to grow.

Check your filters

Ensure you’re changing your filter regularly. If moisture can’t escape through your filters, it will build up inside the unit, causing mildew growth. Learn more about the importance of changing your filter here!

Check the drain line

Look for the PVC drain pipe from the unit that leads outside. Do you notice any cracks or other damage? If not, look for the cleanout tee – this looks like a capital T upside-down. Unscrew the cap on top, and try to pour water into it. If the water starts to back up, you have a clog in the drain line.

Now what?

If you’ve determined the cause of the problem is your filter, simply change the filter and see if the smell improves over the next couple of days. If it’s the drain line, it’s best to call your HVAC professional to fix the issue.

You can also try cleaning your AC unit using the following steps, although it is always recommended to rely on a professional to limit the risk of damage to the unit:

●      Remove the outer case that exposes the HVAC elements.

●      Blow compressed air a foot or two away — this keeps both you and the elements safe.

●      Using a cloth, lightly wipe the front and back of the unit to remove any debris.

●      You can use a household cleaner to clean the parts, but ensure you rinse the cleaner with water to prevent any buildup.

●      Allow the unit to dry, then wipe it down and reassemble.
