Frequently Asked Questions About A/C Maintenance
Whether it’s regular air conditioning maintenance, brand new installation, or solving a problem, our technicians receive many questions about AC units. Since many units don’t come with a manual, per se – and those that do feel complicated – we’re happy to answer some of our most frequently asked questions.
Can I use my AC unit before it is maintained?
Absolutely! We encourage the use of all units before routine maintenance is performed.
Do I need my furnace checked before use?
We get it – sometimes the cold season creeps up before you’re able to schedule maintenance. No worries, it is perfectly alright to warm your home before this service. We do suggest scheduling maintenance as soon as possible, though, as improperly maintained furnaces pose safety risks. The longer you wait to have the furnace serviced, the higher the chances are of a house fire occurring.
Why should I have my unit maintained if it is covered under parts and labor warranty?
Like most warranties, AC unit manufacturers will only honor the parts and labor warranty if they can confirm everything possible has been kept up-to-date on the owner’s part. Any claim you may submit will also need documented evidence of regular maintenance, since a lack thereof could void the warranty.
When should I have my system maintained and cleaned?
We recommend having your AC unit maintained at least twice a year: once in the fall, when weather gets cool, to check all of the heating components, and once in the spring, or when it starts to warm up, for the cooling components.
Failure to have the system maintained regularly could result in faulty equipment or fire hazards.
What do I do if my AC unit stops working?
Many customers leave the unit on while they call an expert, however, leaving on a dysfunctional unit can cause it to freeze. This means the unit would have to thaw before the technician would inspect it, so we recommend turning off the unit as soon as you notice any malfunctioning.
We know it can get toasty, so use any and all fans in your home until your technician is able to identify the issue and solve the problem.
Should I call McCoy’s Heating & Air Conditioning immediately if my AC unit appears to be dysfunctional?
Any time it appears the AC unit isn’t working, first make sure the batteries in the thermostat are fresh. Next, double-check the mode on the thermostat – “cool” for hot months and “heat” for cold months. If those two boxes are checked, give us a call at 731-668-7492 or visit us online at airmccoy.com.
