Should I shut off my AC at night?

You may have heard that turning your AC off at night can reduce your utility bill, save energy, and mean a longer life for your unit. But is shutting off your HVAC for hours at a time really the best option?

Let your unit work smarter, not harder

When you shut off your air conditioner for multiple hours, the compressor will have to work even harder when you turn it back on, especially if it’s humid. HVAC units are built to stop and start as needed throughout the day, and they are built to handle be on long-term.

Where to save money and energy

There are a few different options if you’re interested in saving on your summer electric bill:

●      Turn the AC on fan-only mode. This will allow air to continue circulating within your home without necessarily using the cooling energy, reducing your bill slightly.

●      Turn the temperature up. Since the temperature drops at night naturally, consider turning your thermostat up several degrees at night. This will allow the HVAC unit to run as necessary without completely shutting off.

●      Invest in a smart thermostat. Smart thermostats are a bit of a luxury, but when you look at the long-term cost savings, they’re definitely worth it. Being able to set different temperatures throughout the day will allow you to save money AND live comfortably.

●      Use your fans! Often, stagnant air can feel warmer than it actually is. Using ceiling, box, or window fans are a great way to keep air circulating in your home if you raise the temperature.
