Reduce Allergens in Your Home in Less Than 15 Minutes

As the height of allergy season rolls around, more and more energy is used by your HVAC to keep your family healthy. Aside from tips we’ve mentioned like changing your air filter regularly and keeping your system maintained, there are many steps you can take in less than 15 minutes to reduce allergens in your home.

Dust from top to bottom

Dusting your home weekly removes allergens, pet dander, and other debris that could make your family sick. By dusting from top to bottom, you can ensure you won’t knock dust onto already cleaned areas, finishing with a vacuum or mop.

Wash your pillows

You’re not the only one who loves a soft, comfortable pillow at the end of a long day! It’s best to wash your pillows or their cases every 2-3 weeks, since dust, mites, and hair love to settle into the cushions.

Leave your shoes at the door

Since you want to limit the amount of pollen that comes in your house, leaving your shoes outside the door or just inside can reduce the number of allergens you track in. It may also be worth wiping down pets’ paws or getting them some shoes of their own.

Deep clean this season

At least once this season, but preferably at the beginning and end of spring, clean your baseboards, tops of cabinets, and inside hard-to-reach places. Dust and moisture can build up in various places around your home, which leaves a sanctuary for pollen, dander, and other pollutants.

Clean your curtains

While hanging in front of windows and in direct line of vents, curtains collect a lot of dust. At least once a month, use a vacuum attachment to clean the curtains from top to bottom. You can also toss them in a washer and dryer cycle as needed.

While these steps can help reduce allergens in your home, you may need help from a professional if symptoms don’t subside. Reach out to McCoy’s today to have an HVAC technician help determine the cause of allergen build-up today!
