Why Your Thermostat is Reading Wrong

You step in your home and it feels hotter than usual, but the thermostat says it’s 72 degrees. That can’t be right! After turning on all the fans, trying to turn the thermostat up or down, and any other solutions you can find on YouTube, it may be time to accept that the thermostat has called it quits.

Consider the following:

●      When was your thermostat purchased? If you aren’t sure or if it’s been more than 10 years since you’ve replaced it, it may be ready for an upgrade.

●      Where is your thermostat? If your thermostat is not level, in direct sunlight, or receiving direct air from vents, it may be reading the temperature wrong.

●      Have you checked your air filters, batteries, and settings? If all signs are go, it could be a sign your thermostat’s sensor has gone bad.

If you’ve checked all of the above and are still struggling to figure out why the thermostat is reading incorrectly, give us a call and an HVAC technician will quickly determine the cause of the problem.

In the meantime, try these solutions:

●      Consider purchasing multiple sensors. Having more than one sensor in your home can help the thermostat determine the actual temperature, particularly in multi-level or extremely wide homes. Simply put one sensor on each floor or end of your home, and you should see a more balanced temperature.

●      Determine the best spot for your thermostat. If you’re needing a new one, now is the best time to figure out the ideal location for a new thermostat. Remember to place it somewhere out of direct sunlight, away from vents, and somewhere level.

●      Keep your HVAC clean! Check your air filter regularly, change the thermostat’s batteries as needed, and reprogram when necessary. We also recommend having an HVAC technician inspect your unit at least twice a year.
