Reasons Your Drains Are Clogging

It’s early morning, you’re standing by the sink getting ready for the day ahead, and then you notice: the water isn’t draining. We’ve all had that moment; the one where we come to the dreaded realization that the drain is clogged. Is the world going to come to an end? No, it won’t. However, drains aren’t meant to be clogged and when they are, it is a nuisance that can lead to more serious problems down the road. Here at McCoy’s HVAC, we want to help you understand the reasons your drains are clogging.

Sinks

The most common cause for a clogged sink is simply that grease, hair, and other substances accumulate on the inside walls of drain pipes over time. Avoid dumping coffee grinds and grease down your sink. Additionally, make sure to follow tips such as running hot water through the drain and every so often, washing the inside of your drains with baking soda and vinegar.

Toilets

Are you flushing feminine hygiene products, diapers, diaper wipes, cotton swabs, and/or dental floss down your toilet? If so, there is a great chance this is why your drain is clogging. Avoid flushing items that do not break apart or dissolve. The item may flush down in that moment, but it will get stuck in the drain pipes and become a detriment to the flow of water sooner rather than later.

Bathtubs

Similar to sinks, shower drains collect hair, oil, and soap residue that harden in the drain and lead to clogs. Make sure to check your bathtub stoppers for the aforementioned buildup and for general wear-and-tear.
